Welcome to Year 4

Miss R Hill

Dear Year 4,

Welcome back after what seems like a very short half term! I hope you are well rested as I have lots of exciting things planned for you this half term as we begin to approach Christmas.

In English, we will be focusing on our grammatical knowledge and sentence construction, writing using our topic (The Romans) as our stimulus. The book we will be studying will be The Roman Times. Please remember to bring your reading book, reading record and spelling book into school every day.  Make sure you read and write in your reading record a minimum of 5 times a week.

I will continue to send home spellings to learn. These will be tested towards the end of the week. Please make sure you learn your spellings as well as understand the meaning of the words. I will highlight the spellings you get correct in green and the ones you need to continue to practice in orange.

In maths, please make sure you are constantly practicing your times tables! We will be working on them daily in class to ensure you can recall them quickly! This half term we will be concentrating on column addition and subtraction before moving onto measurement before Christmas.

For our topic work, we will be studying the Romans in more detail following the links we created whilst studying the Celts last half term. If you come across any interesting facts or information about the Romans, then please bring it to school and share it with us. I will be sending home a homework sheet for this half term based upon our topic. This will be the same format as last half term you can pick an activity to complete and bring in on the hand in date as detailed on the sheet.

Having finished our Science topic of electricity, we will be moving on to sound focusing on how sound is created/travels progressing onto investigating how to change the pitch and volume of sound.

In RE, we will be looking at why Jesus is referred to as the ‘light of the world’ and some of the prayers he taught us. As we approach Christmas, our final unit in RE will be Advent.

In PE, we will continue to go swimming on Wednesday afternoons so don’t forget your kit! Commando Joe will continue on Thursdays along with Woodland Warriors- please make sure you have your PE kit and wellies in school at all times, waterproof trousers and a waterproof jacket will be provided when necessary.
