Science Curriculum

Science is one of the four 'Core' Subjects of the National Curriculum.

Through Science, children can learn how to think, make appropriate decisions and solve problems more effectively, whilst gaining reinforcement in number work, language skills, ICT and a reinforcement of Foundation subjects through cross curricular links.

Our Science Curriculum has been reviewed to ensure that it meets the needs of the children and the criteria laid down in the 2015 National Curriculum.

Our approach to Science is based on exploration and is designed to ensure the children undertake as much practical work as possible and can relate their experience to everyday life.

We have a newly renovated science room all ready for inquisitive minds and scientific exploration!

Our Curriculum

Plants - Year 2 National Curriculum Links:

  • observe and describe how seeds and bulbs grow into mature plants

  • Find out and describe how plants need water, light and a suitable temperature to grow and stay healthy.

Plants – Year 3

National Curriculum Links:

  • Investigate the way in which water is transported within plants

States of Matter – Year 3

  • National Curriculum Links:

  • observe that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled, and measure or research the temperature at which this happens in degrees Celsius (°C)

Properties and Changes of Materials – Year 5

National Curriculum Links:

  • Compare and group together everyday materials based on their properties, including their hardness, solubility, transparency, conductivity (electrical and thermal), and response to magnets

  • Know that some materials will dissolve in liquid to form a solution, and describe how to recover a substance from a solution

Space and Earth – Year 5

National Curriculum Links:

  • Planning different types of scientific enquiries to answer questions, including recognising and controlling variables where necessary

  • Taking measurements, using a range of scientific equipment, with increasing accuracy and precision, taking repeat readings when appropriate
